After investing a decent amount of time into this game, i finally decided to write this review.
Let s start with the most important thing: Do I recommend this game. Yes.
Now let s see why.
Community: Mature - you won t see any twelve year olds running about depicting their sexual fantasies with either of your parents.
Helpful - i really can t remember a single game related question they refused to answer
Active - EU servers are usually full
I ll give the community a strong 10/10.
Gameplay: Now this one is more tricky.
The mechanics are not always at their brightest, especially when vaulting over obstacles, but there are a lot of good stuff to make up for that. My favourite is the scare-o-meter suppression, which pretty much forces you to stay in cover, when you would order your soldier from your comfy seat to stand up and take a chance at killing your shooter. Also, folks tend to criticise the hitbox system in the game, but don t buy that. The hitboxes are fine.
Talking about hitting targets, it must be said that tank combat is quite engaging, as it requires at gunners and tank gunners to aim for weakspots engine, crew member, etc, and not just any random part of the hulking metal deathmachines.
Also, your soldier does his best to put his weapon against anything to improve accuracy, which is pretty cool e.g. against trees, if you can lean in close enough.
Gameplay-mechanics: 8/10
Now a bit more about the player part of the gameplay. The game has a few game modes, but folks play territory most of the time, which is the good old capture the zone and hold it stuff either as double conquest, or attack/defense, so if you are a tdm/dm type of guy, you ll have very limited fun here. Let me repeat, game on most servers is about taking and holding objectives. The game also features a chain of command, with one platoon commander, and a number of squad leaders, the latters providing extra spawn points, marking artillery targets, carrying smoke grenades, etc, whereas the platoon commander is in task of managing the assault with aerial recons, artillery fire, coordinating the squads. You may say that s basic stuff nowadays, but the thing is, RO 2 community takes this stuff very seriously, and on the most popular servers, you ll only find the veteran players filling these roles, giving the real magic of the game.
Gameplay-player stuff: 9/10 folks can be unforgiving with unskilled players taking vital roles, I know I am. Note: unskilled player taking vital role is not considered a newby in need of help, it s a ruining at the very least his squad s game, maybe that of his whole team.
Finally, let s discuss the graphics.
It s not your late 2015- early 2016 game, but it does a really good job, although my old r7 tends to have some glitches from time to time with the colours, but there s a one alt-tab solution for that in my case, can t speak for others.
As I m not that eager to my pants about graphics, and I might by a bit biased when talking about RO 2, i rate it 9/10.
That s all. It s a 9/10 for me, and that comes with a recommendation.
Edit: A few additional notes: The roles are available in limited number, so there s a good chance for players with older computers to get stuck as basic infantry. That s not so bad, as those with better weapons will do the heavy lifting, and, as a newby, you would most likely only get shot by those who know the map as the back of their hand, no matter what weapon you have. Later on, when you get to know the game, you ll easily stay alive long enough to fetch some decent weapon if you really want to. Still, by then you will not feel the undenyable urge to do so, as the game is not about kills, but teamwork.
Also the game features a levelling system, but it s nothing overpowered, it only unlocks a few new weapons and equipment, and makes you slightly more adept in combat e.g. less prone to suppression, although don t expect to go rambo on an mg because of it.
